"The second law of thermodynamics says that energy tends to become 
less and less interesting - ice cubes become warm water, electricity 
ends up as heat, and so on. Eventually, the universe will "run down", 
by reaching maximum entropy, at which point everything will be uniformly warm. 
Shannon proved that no matter what you did to a pair of telephone wires 
in terms of filtering, shielding and so on, you were going to lose information 
and gain noise. He referred to the process as entropy.
Information theory states that information tends toward entropy."
